Step 4/6

Signage & script

The writing system on signs is one of the strongest single clues. Cyrillic points you to Russia and its neighbours, Arabic script to the Middle East and North Africa, Thai/Khmer/CJK to South-East and East Asia. Even within the Latin alphabet, special letters (å, ç, ş, ñ) pin the country. Recognise letterforms even when you can't read them.

  • Identify the script first (Latin/Cyrillic/Arabic/CJK)
  • Within Latin, watch for accents: å ç ş ñ ğ
  • Script and driving side together often leave one country
  • Billboards and shop names count too
